Lady Eagles begin sectional soccer title defense Friday

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Kendall’s Megan Hardenbrook and her Lady Eagle teammates will begin defense of their Section V Class C2 championship at home Friday against Campbell-Savona.

Undefeated top seeded Kendall opens defense of its Section V Class C2 girls soccer title by hosting No. 8 Campbell-Savona in a quarterfinal contest at 6 p.m. Friday.

The contest will be a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal which saw Kendall blank Campbell-Savona 6-0. The Lady Eagles went on to shutout Warsaw 3-0 in the semifinals and then nip Caledonia-Mumford 2-1 in double overtime to claim the title and avenge a 1-0 loss in the 2013 final.

Campbell-Savona, which is 8-8-1 on the season, defeated No. 9 Red Jacket 2-1 in the opening round.

Kendall, which is 16-0, has been sparked offensively by Maya Rutland with 25 goals and 7 assists, Taylor Rutland 10 goals and 9 assists, Taylor ReQua 9 goals and 18 assists and Coralee Freitag 9 goals and 9 assists.

Jenna Jacob in goal anchors the Lady Eagles defense which has registered 14 shutouts and allowed only 2 goals in 16 games.

The victor will face the winner of the No. 5 Warsaw (11-5-1) vs. No. 4 Bishop Kearney (11-5) game in the semifinals on October 27.

Also on Friday, No. 6 Holley visits No. 3 Dansville at 3 p.m. in a Class B2 quarterfinal.

Holley is 3-9-4 and Dansville 5-9-2.

The victor will face the winner of the No. 7 North Rose-Wolcott (4-11-1) vs. No. 2 Mynderse (10-6) game in the semifinals on October 27.
