Kendall girls down rival Holley

Putting together a fast start and a strong finish, Kendall scored a 46-31 victory at rival Holley this evening in a Genesee Region League girls basketball game.

Tania Arellano poured in a game high 27 points to lead the way for Kendall as Taylor ReQua added 8, Taylor Kingsbury 7 and Elizabeth Rath 4.

Sam Barniak led Holley with 13. Jade Underwood and Makenzie Ferranti both added 6, Hayley Rowley 4 and Tabitha Swift 2.

Arellano hit two threes and ReQua one to spark Kendall out to a 12-4 first period lead.

After adding to her career 400 plus rebound total, Holley’s Jade Underwood (40) works to get away from Kendall’s Tania Arellano (11).

However, Holley got right back in the game with a 9-0 run midway through the second period which rallied the Lady Hawks into what proved to be their only lead of the night at 15-14. A rebound bucket by Underwood and a three by Barniak ignited that rally which also included a layup off a turnover by Swift and a jumper by Ferranti.

Kendall though answered with a 6-0 run to close the period and region the lead for good by a 27-24 margin at the half. Layups by Kingsbury and Rath keyed that scoring burst.

The teams traded scores throughout the third period which finished with Kendall maintaining a narrow three point, 27-24, lead.

Kendall finally began to pull away for good at the outset of the final quarter utilizing the same scoring combination as keyed the first period uprising. Again Arellano hit two threes and ReQua one to quickly up the Lady Eagles advantage to 10 at 36-26 just 1:20 into the final period.

Buckets by Barniak and Rowley did pull Holley back to within six, 37-31, but the Lady Hawks could get no closer.

Kendall capped off the victory by closing with a 9-0 run including a three, a layup and two free throws by Arellano who had a total of 13 points in the period.

Kendall is now 7-11 on the season.
