It’s tourney time for Medina, Albion cagers
Holiday basketball tournament action swings into high gear Friday as both the Medina boys and Albion boys and girls squads will be in competition.
The defending champion Medina boys will face Orchard Park at 5 p.m. in the opening round of the Pendleton Lions Club Tournament at Starpoint. The host Spartans will take on South Park in the second semifinals.
The consolation and championship games are scheduled for 3:30 and 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Mustangs captured last year’s tournament crown defeating Starpoint 54-47 in the semifinals and Niagara Catholic 56-51 in the title contest.
Medina, which brings a 3-1 record into the tournament, has featured a balanced attack to date as Munjie Brown is averaging 13 points per outing, Ben McPherson 10.1, Kevin Arnold 10 and Jason Hellwig 9.
The Albion boys will face Notre Dame at 6:30 p.m. at Genesee Community College in the opening round of the Batavia Lions Club Tournament. Batavia will take on University Prep of Rochester in the second game.
The consolation and championship games are slated for December 30.
Albion, which is at 2-2, has Des Blackmon averaging 11.5 and Manny Thompson 10.3 per game.
The Albion girls will face the host school in the first round of the Wheatland-Chili Tournament. The consolation and championship games are set for Saturday.
Currently at 1-3, the Purple Eagles have a trio of players averaging in double figures including Chanyce Powell, Justice Nauden and Sarah Metzler.
Also on Friday, Kendall will host Byron-Bergen at 1 p.m. in a Genesee Region League boys basketball make-up game.
On Saturday, Barker will host Lyndonville in a girl/boy basketball doubleheader with competition set to begin at 11 a.m.
On the wrestling mats, Holley will host its annual Duals Tournament on Friday and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. both days. The tourney field includes Albion.
Also on the mats, Roy-Hart will be competing in the Akron Tournament and Lyndonville in the Letchworth Tournament on Saturday.
