Hot shooting Mustangs romp past Eagles

The temperature may have been hovering around zero outside but the shooting was red hot inside as Medina exploded for 55 points in the first half in route to a 91-64 romp over visiting CSAT this evening in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game.

Munjie Brown poured in a career high 32 points to spearhead the attack for Medina which improves to 5-2 in the league and 8-3 overall.

In all 10 players contributed to the point parade for the Mustangs as Ben McPherson netted 10, Cedric Griffith 9, Jason Hellwig, Dylan Lewis and Larry Bruning 8, Brennan Zinkievich 6, Kevin Arnold 5, David Garrow 3 and Adam Hoot 2.

Jorge Brown and Darrell Wesley both scored 17 and Darius Carson 14 for defending champion CSAT which hit a dozen threes on the night but still slips to 4-2 in N-O action.

Setting the tone at the outset for the high scoring, free wheeling evening, Medina grabbed an 8-2 lead in the first 1:20 on two threes by Lewis and a layup off a steal by Brown.

Brown had a total of 13 in the opening period including another layup, a jumper, a rebound bucket, a three-point play and two free throws as the Mustangs galloped out to a 15 point, 27-12, advantage.

Keeping the hot hand while also dominating on the boards and with an effective pressure defense, the Mustangs erupted for 28 more points in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 30, 55-25, at the half.

Brown had 11 during that uprising including a three, a jumper, a layup and a rebound bucket as Hellwig chipped in with six points, McPherson four and Griffith a three.

The Mustangs maintained a commanding 35 point, 75-40, advantage at the three-quarter mark.

Albion 58, Akron 52
Trailing 9-7 after one period, Albion used a balanced attack to outscore host Akron 19-5 in the second quarter keying a 58-52 victory.

Austin Loyd scored 6, Des Blackmon 4 and Andrew Burroughs 3 to set the pace for Albion in the second quarter which rallied the Purple Eagles into a 26-14 half-time advantage.

Blackmon finished with 15 points and Loyd 10 as Ryan Fannin added 9, Burroughs 6, Manny Thompson, Alex Bison and Clayton Stanton 4, Connor Barleben and Manny Taylor 3. Barleben also grabbed off 10 rebounds.

Noah Diebel scored 20 and CJ Longwell 12 for Akron.

Albion improves to 3-5 and Akron drops to 1-5.

Barker 58, Newfane 39
Jacob Haight scored a game high 21, Bryce Moeller 12, Mitch Luckman 12 and Christopher Sweeney 10 to lead front-running Barker past visiting Newfane 58-39 keeping the Raiders perfect in N-O action at 6-0.

Barker held leads of 15-10 after one period 28-18 at the half and 49-32 at the three-quarter mark.
