Hosting Fred Large Memorial Tourney will highlight Lyndonville’s opening week
Anchored by a good group of eight returnees, Lyndonville’s underclassmen dominated wrestling team is set to open the season this week with a non league match and a special tournament.
The Tigers will visit Pavilion/York on Wednesday for a non league meet and then host the Fred Large Memorial Tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The tourney is dedicated to the memory of Fred Large who organized the Lyndonville wrestling program and guided the Tigers to a number of league and sectional titles.
Over a dozen teams will be competing in the tournament including Albion, Medina, Holley-Kendall and Roy-Hart/Barker.
The Tigers pre holiday competition will also feature a trip to Virginia to compete in the Langley High Tournament on December 20.
Lyndonville’s veteran group includes senior Ty Holmes, juniors Ben Doolan, Greyson Romano and Justin Holmes; sophomores Michael Alexander, Shannon Withey, Brody Hazel and Chanse Amsdill. Ty Holmes won a Section V Class B2 title.
“We’re young but there is plenty of experience in that group,” said Tigers Co-Coach Jim Zeliff. “Chanse Amsdill has the least amount of experience in the group but he still has a full varsity season from last year as an 8th grader. Collectively, they have 18 years of experience entering this season. Byron-Bergen will be tough for us to get by but I believe this group is up for the challenge. I expect our team to rise to the challenge and push for both a league and Sectional title.”
The Tigers will begin Genesee Region League competition at Holley-Kendall on December 14.
