Hoot hurls Medina past Dunkirk to open B1 sectionals

Led by the sparkling one hit pitching effort of senior Adam Hoot, No. 6 seed Medina blanked No. 11 Dunkirk 6-0 at Vets Park this afternoon in a Section VI Class B1 pre-quarterfinal game.
Hoot struck out 13 and allowed only an infield single with two out in the seventh inning.
“Adam has been dominant,” said Medina Coach Eric Hellwig. “He was deadly accurate and his curveball was really breaking.”
Hoot, who struck out a school record tying 18 batters in an earlier season game, struck out the side in the second and fifth innings and fanned two in both the first and third frames. He later capped off the win with a strikeout after having the no hit bid broken up with the two out infield single.
Medina grabbed an early 2-0 lead by scoring once in the first inning on a single by Josh Scroger and an error and once in the second on three errors.

Medina then loaded the bases in the third on singles by Justin Morgan, Matt Riemer and Hoot but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
The Mustangs finally opened up a little breathing room by scoring twice in the fourth inning on s bases loaded hit batter and an RBI single by Jason Hellwig. Sam Crowley had a lead-off triple and Scroger a double in the inning which saw two other Mustang runners get thrown out at home.
Riemer capped off the Medina attack by belting a two run home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning.
Riemer, Scroger and Morgan each had two hits on the day and Shane Freeman a triple.
Medina, which is now 11-9, next visits No. 3 Burgard in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Class C
Portville 7, Barker 4
Tanner Gregoire, Alonzo St. Louis, Doug Bachman and Jacob Desmarais had the only hits for No. 11 Barker in the 7-4 Class C loss at No. 6 Portville.
Class B1
No. 8 seed Newfane blanked No. 9 Alden 13-0 as Josh Kneeland hurled a two hitter with 16 strikeouts.
Class A2
No. 2 Albion will host No. 7 Maryvale at 5 p.m.Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Class A2 playoffs. Maryvale advanced by ousting No. 10 Amherst 8-5.
