An outstanding high school wrestling career is being honored as Holley High graduate Andrew Grillo has been selected for induction into the Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony on May 14 will be a very special family affair for Andrew whose father, long time Holley wrestling Coach John Grillo, was inducted into the Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2020.

Andrew captured a state championship in 2004 going 42-0 that season.

That year the state championships were held at the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena.

Andrew opened the competition with an 8-2 win in the quarterfinals but then needed a takedown with just 16 seconds remaining to snap a 3-3 tie and earn a narrow 5-3 victory in the semifinals.

His title match was also a close 4-2 victory keyed by an escape and a takedown in the second period.

A four time Genesee Region champion and a four time Section V Class champion, he compiled a career record of 186-11 at Holley.

Andrew, who teaches at Holley, went on to wrestle collegiately at SUNY Brockport where he earned All SUNYAC Academic honors.

His father John, who compiled a career total of some 780 victories, guided Holley to 22 G-R League and a dozen Section V championships during his three decades at the Hawks wrestling helm.
