Bolstered by a large turnout of nearly 60, the Holley High boys and girls track teams are prepping for Wednesday’s scheduled Genesee Region League opener at Alexander.
“Our numbers are outstanding,” said Assistant Coach Dan Goodwin. “It’s definitely the largest group we’ve had so we’re excited about the numbers. We have a great core of athletes both boys and girls.”
Holley’s season will be highlighted by the opening of the Hawks new track facility on April 23 against Byron-Bergen and Attica.
“We’re looking forward to that. It’s a great thing,” said Goodwin of the new facility.
The Holley boys squad is led by seniors Jimmy Williams (200, 400, relays), Isaac Miller (shot-put, discus), Phil Haughton (jumps, shot, relays) and junior Martin Beadle (distance, relays, steeplechase).
Williams was first in the 200 and second in the 400 and Beadle first in the steeplechase and third in both the 800 and 1600 at the G-R All-League meet last year.
Setting the pace for the Holley girls squad are seniors Nicole Blackburn (hurdles, high jump, relays), Lexi Reyngoudt (jumps, hurdles), Paige Whittier (shot-put, discus) Claudia Passarell (sprints, long jump, pole vault) and Monica Murlo (middle distance, hurdles) along with juniors Emily Radford (distance) and Sam Barniak (shot-put, discus, relays).
Blackburn placed third in the high jump, Passarell third in the long jump and Reyngoudt seventh in the pentathlon at the G-R All-League meet.
