Holley matmen prep for title defense
Anchored by a sizable nucleus of over a dozen veterans, Holley is getting set to begin defense of its Genesee Region League wrestling title.
Seniors Dan Flanagan, Kevin Avery, Ryan Camacho, Issac Miller and David Weaver along with juniors Alan White, Martin Beadle and Lucas Silvis; sophomores Dakota White, Nick Shenck and Ross Pinson and freshman Gaje Papponetti lead the way for Holley which has captured the G-R title the last four years in a row and 14 of the last 17 years.
Beadle posted a 41-7 record last year placing second at the Class BB Tournament and fourth at the Section V state qualifier. Avery, who went 36-9, placed third at the Class BB and fifth at the sectionals while White, who went 41-10, placed fourth at both the Class BB and the sectionals. Silvis also went 32-13 and Shenck 31-14 last year.
“The kids have the potential. The key is If we can spread the kids out in the different weight classes we could have a successful season,” said Coach John Grillo. “We graduated some excellent wrestlers so we’re going to start off slow and hopefully by the end of the season get everyone ready for postseason.”
