Holley, Kendall spikers win sectional openers
Jumping out to a two set lead at the outset, No. 7 Holley went on to defeat visiting No. 10 Williamson 25-17, 25-9, 22-25, 25-20 this evening in the opening round of the Section V Class C2 volleyball playoffs.
Leading 17-14, Holley pulled away in the opening set as Jocelyn Chilton served up points 18-24, including three aces, as AJ Botello had a kill for the set winner. Nicole Mrzywka also had 4 aces and 2 kills in the set for the Lady Hawks.
Mrzywka then served up points 7-12, including three aces, and Botello 17-22, also including three aces, to spark Holley in the second set. Neila Hand registered an ace for the set winner.
Williamson stayed in the match by taking the third set as Mackenzie Mangos served up points 18-24 including a pair of aces.
Holley though rebounded to take the fourth set and close out the match.
Trailing 15-17, Holley regained the lead at 18-17 as Rachael Howard served up points 16-18.
Then, leading by a narrow 19-18 margin, Holley got a key run of four straight points by Mrzywka to extend the lead at 23-18. She followed up with a kill for point 24 as the set and match winner came on a side out.
Mrzywka finished with 10 kills and 8 aces and Howard 6 aces.
Holley will next visit No. 2 Warsaw in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Kendall 25-25-25, Hinsdale 12-8-15
No. 6 Kendall rolled to a straight set win over No. 11 Hinsdale in a Class C3 opener at Warsaw as Jessica Coble was 10-10 at the service line with 5 aces, 3 digs, 2 kills and 2 assists and Jenna Regan went 10-10 from the line with an ace and 5 kills.
Kelly Mayes also had had 5 kills and 4 aces, and Brittney Marks had 6 assists, 3 kills and 2 aces for the Lady Eagles.
Kendall will next travel to CG Finney on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the quarterfinals.
Lyndonville 25-25-25, Dundee 9-18-15
No. 7 Lyndonville defeated No. 10 Dundee in straight sets 25-9, 25-18, 25-15 in a Class D2 opening round match at HAC. No details of the match were reported.
Time changed for Albion match
Albion will visit Springville at 5 p.m. Friday in a Section VI Class B2 quarterfinal match. It was originally scheduled for 6 p.m.
