Holley and Albion win tourney openers

Holley and Albion both scored narrow wins in the opening round of the Kendall girls basketball tournament this evening.

Holley rallied late to edge Medina 38-34 in overtime in the opener. Albion then trimmed Kendall 40-37 in the second game.

Holley will now face Albion in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Medina will meet Kendall in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Holley 38, Medina 34 OT

Trailing 30-25, Holley rallied to send the game into overtime knotted at 32-32 by closing the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run. Alivia Wolf scored all 7 points during that run capped off by a game tying basket with 5 seconds to go.

The Lady Hawks then outscored the Mustangs 6-2 in the overtime period to claim the win on baskets by Zoey Wolf, Mia Thom and Brynn Thomas.

Alivia Wolf finished with a game high 16 points as Zoey Wolf and Thom both had 6, Thomas 4, Alexis VanAmeron 3, Desiree McCormick 2 and Ella Turpyn 1.

Ariel Smith scored 15 and Honesty Hill 12 to lead Medina as Roswyn Oakes added 4, Cassidy Janas 2 and Samantha Heschke 1.

Medina led 7-3 after the first quarter, 16-12 at the half and 24-19 at the three-quarter mark.

Albion 40, Kendall 37

Trailing 13-11 at the half, Albion used a big 18-9 third period scoring edge to rally into the lead for good over Kendall.

Aaliyah Jones scored 5, Julia Knight and Melia Prince 4, Kenzie Snook 3 and Cami London 2 in the decisive third period for Albion which rallied into a 29-22 lead.

The Purple Eagles maintained an 11 point, 37-26, advantage midway through the final period as Snook had a pair of baskets and Knight and Paige Newton  one each.

However, Kendall did make the finish exciting by closing with an 11-3 run to make the final a slender 3 point margin.

Knight led Albion’s balanced attack with 9 as Snook added 8, Jones and Prince 7, Newton 5 and London 4.

Ava LaMay scored 13 and Izzy D’Agostino 10 to lead Kendall as Addison Kludt and Stella Kwiatek both had 4 and Alea Barrett, Brooke Rodas and Mia Price 2 each.
