Holley, Albion girls win sectional openers

Holley and Albion both posted shut out victories this evening to open sectional girls soccer playoff action.

Holley blanked visiting Pembroke 3-0 in the first round of the Section V Class CCC playoffs while Albion shut out host Amherst 1-0 to begin Section VI Class A-2 playoff action.

No. 7 seed Holley grabbed a narrow 1-0 first half lead over No. 10 Pembroke on a goal by Luca Fahmer, her fifth of the season 11 minutes into the half.

The Lady Hawks finally put a lock on the victory when Nicole Mauro scored two quick goals late in the second half with 16 and 13 minutes remaining. The goals were her team leading sixth and seventh of the season.

Holley next visits No. 2 Mynderse on Friday in the quarterfinals.

No. 10 Albion made a lone goal by Mairah Elsenheimer, her team leading 16th of the season, off an assist from Kayla Doyle, stand up for the narrow 1-0 win over No. 7 Amherst.

Jayne Bannister earned the shut out in goal for Albion whose defense was anchored by the quartet of Kelsey Schmitt, Arianna Smith, Mandi Covis and Ally Page.

Albion next faces the winner of the Lew-Port vs. Grand Island game on Thursday.
