Map from National Weather Service: The NWS in Buffalo says the strongest winds will follow a cold front which will cross the region from 3 to 8 p.m. today

A high wind warning is in effect today from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. tonight for Orleans, Niagara, Monroe, Genesee, Erie and Wyoming counties.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo says there will be southwest winds at 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.

“The damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the Weather Service said. “Shallow rooted pines and dead ash trees will be most susceptible. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”

The Weather Service urged people to avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches.

“If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows,” the Weather Service said. “Use caution if you must drive.”
