The heat index could top 100 in Orleans County on Friday and Saturday afternoons, and be as high as 105 to 108, the National Weather Service said.

The Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for Orleans, Niagara, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Livingston and Ontario counties.

The watch is in effect from noon Friday through early evening Saturday.

“An Excessive Heat Watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected,” the Weather Service said. “The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
