The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a heat advisory for Orleans County with the heat index forecast to be in the upper 90s today.

The heat advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for Orleans, Niagara, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego, Livingston and Ontario counties.

Today is forecast for a high of 88. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, mainly after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain, the Weather Service said.

The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. The Weather Service urges people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
