Heat advisory in effect today with heat index expected to hit 100

A heat advisory is effect for Orleans County today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the heat index forecast to hit 100.

The heat advisory also includes Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Livingston, Ontario and Chautauqua counties.

The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, the National Weather Service in Buffalo said.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the Weather Service said. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”

People should take extra precautions if working or spending time outside. When

possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

The high temperature today is forecast for 93. The rest of the week the highs aren’t forecast to hit 90 but will be in the 80s, according to the Weather Service.
