A heat advisory is in effect in Orleans County today from noon to 6 p.m. when heat index values will be in the mid to upper 90s, the National Weather Service said.

The advisory also includes Niagara, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, Oswego, Livingston and Ontario counties.

“The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible,” the National Weather Service said. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check in on relatives and neighbors.”

Today’s high is forecast to be 91 degrees.

The Shoe Tree has been a craze since 1986 when the late Earl Baun helped a girlfriend get rid of about eight to 10 pairs of shoes. He threw them into the trees and thousands of shoes have been tossed into the trees or nailed to them since then.
