Hartland firefighter killed when struck by fire truck

SOMERSET – A member of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Company was killed on Tuesday night when a fire truck backed into her at the scene of a field fire.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said a Barker Fire Department rescue truck was backing southbound on Quaker Road at 8:38 p.m. when it struck and ran over a fire police member from the Hartland department. That fire police member was acting as a spotter for the vehicle driver.

The fire police member succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the rescue truck was uninjured, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

The names of the parties involved are being withheld at this time pending notification of family. Investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit is continuing.
