H.S. diamond teams face very busy week
Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Albion first baseman Bryce Pritchard and his Purple Eagles look to stay in title contention as they begin the final week of the regular season.
Thanks to Mother Nature’s steady barrage of rain showers of late, and with league titles on the line, local high school baseball and softball teams face very crowded schedules heading into this last full week of the regular season.
In addition to dealing with weather caused postponements, baseball teams face another major concern due to the addition of pitch count regulations this season which makes planning a pitching rotation for playing 3, 4 or even 5 games in a week, which could well happen this week, a huge challenge.
The Niagara-Orleans League baseball standings currently is led by Wilson at 6-1 and Roy-Hart at 5-1. However, the Lakemen still have 5 games to play and the Rams 6 over the next 9 days before the sectional seeding meeting on May 16 and those contests include a pair of head-to-head meetings between the two.
That situation, which will make pitching a huge factor, also keeps Albion in the thick of the title chase as the Purple Eagles, though two games off the pace at 6-3, have only 3 games left to play. The Purple Eagles are slated for a quick start to the week by hosting rival Medina on Monday and Newfane Tuesday.
The N-O softball title race is a close three-way battle with Roy-Hart leading the way at 7-1 followed by Newfane at 5-1 and Akron 6-2. Defending champion Akron still has a pair of games against Newfane and one vs. Roy-Hart.
The busiest teams this coming week will likely be the Lyndonville, Holley and Kendall softball squads which have games scheduled for every day Monday through Friday with all but one of the games being Genesee Region League contests. Lyndonville at 5-1 is in the thick of the race for a G-R Division 2 title.
The Lyndonville baseball squad, which at 6-1 in the G-R and 10-1 overall is also in the thick of a title race, faces a busy week of 4 games as does Holley.
