Green finishes stroke play portion of U.S. Women’s Amateur in second place
Improving on Monday’s strong opening round, Medina’s Melanie Green fired a 2 under par round of 69 today to finish the stroke play portion of the U.S. Women’s Amateur championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma in second place.
Green will now be one of the top seeds for the match play portion of the championship which begins on Wednesday. The field for the match play portion of the championship will be comprised of the low 64 scorers after the stroke play portion.
Setting the tone for her strong round today, Green, who started play on the 10th hole, birdied three of the first four holes to improve to -4 and gain a share of the lead.
Another birdie on her 13th hole again briefly moved Green into a share of the top spot at -4. She did bogey her 14th hole to slip back to -3 but pared the final four holes to keep that score.
Today’s round of 69 combined with Monday’s 70 gives her a 139 total for the stroke portion of the event.
The match play portion of the championship will have a round of 64 golfers on Wednesday. The field will continue to be cut with rounds of 32 and 16 on Thursday followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
