Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today that the state is increasing the maximum size of social gatherings from 10 to 25 for regions in Phase 3. That includes Orleans County, which is in the Finger Lakes Region.

Cuomo said the positive health data in the fight against Covid-19 convinced him to increase the size of crowds. For example, on Sunday there were 1,608 people hospitalized in the state from Covid-19, that is the lowest level of hospitalizations in the three months the state has bene battling the coronavirus with social distancing, school closures and restrictions on businesses and public events.

The governor also announced today that the Western New York region will enter Phase 3 on Tuesday. The WNY region includes Niagara, Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua and Allegany counties.

The governor praised state residents for taken the virus seriously the past three months. Those efforts have paid off, with the state going from the highest rate of infection three months ago to the lowest rate right now.

Cuomo said the state continues to reduce infections even as it reopens.

“That is a tremendous exception,” Cuomo said. “The other states are seeing it go up.”
