G-R girls nip N-O in overtime

Making it two narrow victories in a row, the Genesee Region League nipped the Niagara-Orleans League 64-62 in overtime this evening at Medina in the 18th annual Exceptional Senior girls basketball game.

A layup by Alexander’s Olivia George with 12 seconds remaining in the overtime period provided the margin of victory for the G-R which also claimed a narrow 40-39 win in last year’s contest.

The N-O had pulled into a 62-62 tie on a three-point play by Medina’s Emily Kams with 1:01 remaining.

The N-O’s last lead was 59-55 at the outset of the extra period after back-to-back layups by Albion’s Chanyce Powell and Wilson’s Kayla Neumann.

However, the G-R answered right back with a key 7-0 run ignited by a three by Attica’s Alyssa Meyer for a 62-59 lead and didn’t trail again.

The N-O sent the contest into overtime on a jumper by Neumann with 12 seconds to go which knotted the score at 55-55.

Back-to-back rebound baskets by Oakfield-Alabama’s Hannah Scarborough and Alexander’s Marissa Scharlau had given the G-R  55-52 lead with just under a minute to go.

Neumann had a total of 9, Kams 7 and Powell 6 in the second half which saw 5 ties and as many lead changes.  The G-R got baskets from 10 different players during that stretch.

The N-O grabbed a slender 26-25 lead at the end of the first half which featured 3 ties and 6 lead changes.

Powell sparked the N-O in the opening half with 11 while Meyer tallied 9 and Lyndonville’s Aubrey Lewis 5 for the G-R.

Meyer finished with a total of 15 as George added 9, Lewis and Emily Weber (Attica) 7, Lizzie Rath (Kendall). and Meaghan Kogut (Elba) 4, Tatiana Draper (Elba), Karon Richenberg (Byron-Bergen) and Carly Bogue (Elba) 3, Makenzie Muck (Lyndonville), Hannah Bowen (Notre Dame), Scarborough and Scharlau 2 and Hailey Hubbard (Byron-Bergen) 1.

Powell took game high honors for the N-O with 19 as Neumann had 13, Kams 12, Olivia Littman (Newfane) and Emily Blanchard (Albion) 5 and Jen Darlak (Wilson), Rachel Senek (Wilson), Sierra Chudy (Albion) and Molley Gross (Medina) 2.

The G-R roster also included Emily Stenson (Attica), Daniela Volkmar (Kendall) and Riley D’Alba (Oakfield-Alabama) while the N-O lineup also included Nikki Eldred (Albion), Emily Annable (Barker) and Lydia Dewart (Barker).

The G-R win cuts the N-O’s lead in the series to 11-7.
