Football, soccer highlight 2017 for Albion

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Brilliance Johnson and his Albion teammates not only defeated rival Medina but also shared the B2 Division title and earned a berth in the sectionals.

The Albion varsity football squad had a big 2017 season defeating rival Medina 51-22, earning a share of a division title for the first time since 2006 and gaining a berth in the sectional playoffs for the first time since 2011.  Albion shared the Class B2 title with Dunkirk which also downed the Purple Eagles 25-7 in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI playoffs.

The Albion girls varsity soccer team made school history by advancing to the sectional finals for the first time. The Purple Eagles, which needed overtime to nip rival Medina 1-0 in the opening round, downed Alden 2-1 in the semifinals but then dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Niagara-Orleans League champion Newfane in the Class B-1 final.

Kendall Derisley and her Albion teammates earned a berth in the sectional finals for the first time in the program’s history.

Albion senior Chanyce Powell repeated as the Section VI long jump champion and also placed third in the triple jump.

The Albion girls cross-country team placed second in the Section VI Class B2 race.

Albion golfer Nick Penna fired a school record round of 32 in a win over Barker.

The Albion duo of Blake Aina and Preston Flugel captured Section VI Class B wrestling titles.

Former long-time Albion football Coach Dick Diminuco was inducted into the Section VI Hall of Fame.

The Albion JV football team posted a perfect 8-0 record.

The Albion youth football Varsity Division team went 11-0 defeating Tri Town 40-6 in the playoff championship game.

The Albion U18 girls soccer team captured a Rochester District League title.

Barre nipped Sandstone 9-8 in the Albion Midget Baseball League playoff final to claim a third straight title.

The Barre Cubs won the U10 Midget League title edging Carlton 5-4.

All Smiles claimed the Orleans Girls Softball League title.
