Here Barker’s Erika Moeller brings the ball up field against Medina’s Teanna Cardone during the earlier season meeting between the two teams at Vets Park.

In recent years the Niagara-Orleans League field hockey championship has very often been decided on the two head-to-head meetings between Akron and Barker and this season is no exception.

In what has come down to a two team title race, undefeated Akron currently holds the top spot at 10-0-0 while defending champion Barker is still in the hunt at 8-1-1.

The teams will collide in a key title showdown at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday as Barker hosts Akron. The Lady Tigers nipped the Lady Raiders 1-0 in their earlier season meeting.

Akron can claim its first N-O championship since 2006 with a win or a tie over Barker. Interestingly, the Lady Tigers shared the title in 2006 with Barker at 12-0-2 as the teams played to ties in their two meetings. The Lady Tigers last outright N-O championship was in 2005.

Barker needs a win over Akron to stay alive and then a Wilson win or tie against Akron on Thursday in the regular season finale in order for the Lady Raiders to claim at least a share of their 10th straight N-O championship. Third place Wilson (7-3-1), which can still play the spoilers role, was knocked out of title contention by Roy-Hart last week by a narrow 1-0 margin.

The N-O boys cross-country title race also has a key tri-meet on Tuesday as defending champion Barker (3-0) plays host to Newfane (3-1) and Akron (2-1). The meet also features a key girls matchup with defending champion Akron at 3-0 going against 4-0 Newfane.

With just one game remaining defending champion Wilson and rival Newfane are deadlocked for the N-O girls soccer lead at 12-1. Newfane pulled even with three-time defending champion Wilson by posting a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Wednesday’s regular season finales will have Wilson at Barker (1-12) and Newfane hosting third place Akron (9-3).

In N-O volleyball action, undefeated (10-0) Albion can lock up ouright pssession of a third straight league title win a home court win over Newfane (3-6) on Wednesday.

In Genesee Region League boys soccer competition Holley at 6-2 is still in the thick of the title race as the Hawks visit front-running Wheatland-Chili (6-1-1) in a key showdown on Wednesday and then host Attica (1-6-1) on Friday to close out the regular season. Holley nipped W-C 3-2 in their earlier meeting.

The undefeated Kendall girls squad (12-0, 15-0), which has already locked up a third straight G-R Division 1 title, will look to complete an undefeated regular season and claim a top seed for the upcoming sectional playoffs as the Lady Eagles visit runner-up Byron-Bergen (8-3-1) on Thursday.

The week will be capped off with the renewal of the century plus long Medina vs. Albion football rivalry as the Mustangs visit the Purple Eagles.
