Fast start keys Mustangs past Purple Eagles

Racing out to a 14-0 lead at the outset, Medina went on to defeat rival Albion 60-45 this evening in a Niagara-Orleans League game at Medina.

Brian Fry had two layups and a three, Nate Sherman a layup and a jumper and Vincent Montague a three to key that early uprising for the Mustangs.

Fry had a total of 12 in the period, including another three, at Medina maintained a 14 point, 20-6, lead at the end of the stanza.

Albion did cut the deficit to 8, 30-22, at the half by closing the second period with a 6-0 run on two layups by Deyonci Farley and a rebound bucket by Bryce Pritchard. Sherman scored 6 and Joe Cecchini 4 for the Mustangs in the period.

A three by Vincent Zona then pulled Albion within 5, 20-25, at the outset of the third period but the Purple Eagles would get no closer.

Medina answered back with a decisive 11-0 run, including two threes by Izaiah Rhim, a jumper by Sherman and three free throws by Chinn, propelling the Mustangs back out to a 16 point, 41-25, advantage.

A layup off a steal by Fry and a layup by Montague helped keep the Mustangs up by 16, 46-30, at the three-quarter mark.

Montague then had three baskets and Cecchini two in the final stanza to help keep Medina in command.

Fry finished with a total of 16, Montague and Sherman 12, Rhim 9, Cecchini 8 and Chinn 3.

Farley, who was hampered by three first half fouls, took game high scoring honors for Albion with 18 as Zona added 8, Pritchard 7, Michael DiCureia 4, Liam Ward and Dylan Fox 3 and Brilliance Johnson 2.

Medina improves to 2-0 in the league and 7-1 overall while Albion slips to 1-1, 2-4.
