Extension doing produce distributions on June 10 and June 24
1,200 boxes will be given away at fairgrounds
KNOWLESVILLE – The Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds will host two big produce distributions this month with 1,200 boxes available on June 10 and June 24.
The Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension hosted the first distribution on May 29 and went through all 1,200 boxes that weigh about 20 pounds each.
The Extension is hosting the distribution of USDA farmers-to-families produce boxes that include potatoes (1-5 pounds), oranges (1-4 pounds), apples (1-3 pounds), onions (1-3 pounds), green vegetables (1-3 pounds of broccoli, cabbage, green pepper, etc.), and carrots (1-2 pounds). Some of the produce items come from Orleans County farms.
James Desiderio Inc. of Buffalo is the distributor of the produce.
The distribution will begin at 10 a.m. and continue through late afternoon. On May 29, the 1,200 boxes were gone at about 4 p.m. Vehicles should enter the fairgrounds from the Wood Road entrance off Route 31.
This is a first-come, first-served opportunity and there are no pre-orders or deliveries available. Anyone is welcome to come and pick up a box — this is not limited to families with children. Extension staff and volunteers will load the boxes into a trunk or back of a truck. For questions, please email orleans@cornell.edu or call the Cooperative Extension at 585-798-4265 and leave a voice mail. Staff are monitoring the calls and will respond.
