During his educational career as a teacher, coach and administrator, Jeff Evoy, who passed away in 2016, touched the lives of  students and community members in the Albion, Medina and Pembroke school districts.

This Saturday the varsity baseball teams from those three schools will compete in the second annual Jeff Evoy Memorial Scholarship doubleheader at Vets Park.

Albion will face Pembroke at 4 p.m. and Medina will take on Wilson at 7 p.m.

The event is also a significant one for Wilson as Lakemen Coach Mark Kurtz was a lifelong friend of Evoy’s.

Wilson downed Medina 11-5 in last year’s inaugural Evoy Memorial Scholarship event which has been expanded to a doubleheader this year so Albion and Pembroke could take part.

There will be a brief ceremony in between games, including first pitches being thrown out by Evoy’s  family.

“We would like to invite all of Jeff’s former students and colleagues to come take part in the day and help us continue to to honor Jeff’s spirit of hard work, dedication, love of sports, and love of community,” said games coordinator Eric Hellwig.

Hellwig noted that last year’s event raised about $2,000 to kick start the Evoy Scholarship fund. He added that if anyone would like to donate to the scholarship but can’t attend the games, they may make checks payable to Medina Central School District, and send to c/o Eric Hellwig, Medina High School, 2 Mustang Drive, Medina, NY 14103.
