MEDINA – Western New York Energy had a mechanical issue in a corn oil storage tank this morning, and called firefighters at about 9 a.m. “in an abundance of caution,” said Tim Winters, the acting CEO and chief financial officer.

Employees could tell the corn oil tank was warmer than usual. The plant’s employees pinpointed there was a problem with a heating element, and the issue was resolved quickly.

“We didn’t want to take a chance for the safety of our employees and the surrounding community,” Winters said. “We appreciate the Medina and Shelby fire departments for responding.”

The plant didn’t cease operating and firefighters left the scene after about 30 minutes, Winters said.
