Taking charge with a big third period scoring surge, No. 6 seed Depew went on to upend No. 3 host Medina 54-31 this evening in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B1 boys basketball tournament.

Trailing 22-21 at the outset of the second half, Depew put together a decisive 19-5 scoring burst to open up a 40-27 advantage at the three-quarter mark.

Jakeb Grant, Depew’s 6-6 center, took charge inside scoring five buckets and Collin Generek provided the long-range shooting with a pair of threes to highlight that Wildcat uprising.

A rebound bucket by Cedric Griffith and a jumper by Munjie Brown pulled Medina to within 11, 42-31, early in the fourth quarter but the Mustangs could not score again.
Depew capped off the win and a trip to the semifinals by closing the game with a 12-0 run.

Grant finished with a game high 21 and Denis Vanini added 11.

Griffith and Justin Morgan each had 8 on the night for Medina as Brown added 6, Kevin Arnold 5 and Jason Hellwig and Ben McPherson 2 each.

Depew took a 12-9 lead after one quarter as Vanini netted 5 and Grant 4. Griffith had 5 to keep Medina close.

The Wildcats maintained a narrow 21-20 lead at the half as Morgan hit a pair of threes in the second quarter for the Mustangs.

Medina regained the lead for what proved to be the last time at 22-21 on a layup by Brown to open the second half. However, the rest of the quarter was all Depew as the Wildcats used the decisive 19-5 run to regain the lead for good.

Medina finishes the season at 12-7 while Depew advances with a 10-10 record.
