Bulldogs best Mustangs in opener

Steadily pulling away, Burgard rolled to a 71-48 victory over host Medina this evening in a season opening non league game.

Jaelyn Hall took game high scoring honors with 20 and Isaiah Jamison added 16 to lead the attack for Burgard.

Jason Hellwig scored 15, Justin Morgan 12, Dylan Lewis 10, Brennan Zinkievich 7 and Tyler Ames 4 for Medina.

Burgard used an early 10-0 run to jump out to a 15-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Morgan netted eight, including a three and a three-point play, to keep Medina close in the early going.

Back-to-back buckets by Lewis and Hellwig pulled Medina to within one, 15-14, at the outset of the second quarter but the Mustangs would get no closer.

Burgard answered right back with a 12-3 run, including two layups each by Jaelyn Hall and Zion Hall, to quickly regain a 10 point, 27-17 lead.

The Bullldogs maintained a 13 point, 35-22, advantage at the half.

Hellwig had nine in the period for the Mustangs.

Burgard extended the lead to 20 at 47-27 with 3:20 to go in the third period after a 12-5 run.

The Bulldogs maintained an 18 point, 54-38, lead at the three-quarter mark. Jaelyn Hall tallied 8 and Jamison 5 in the period.

Medina next visits Tapestry in Buffalo on December 9 while Burgard returns to Orleans County Friday for a game at Albion.
