Big early inning keys Mustangs past Panthers
A big second inning scoring burst ignited Medina to a 14-1 victory over host Newfane this afternoon as the front-running Mustangs improve to 8-0 in Niagara-Orleans League baseball competition.
Leading 1-0, Medina broke the game open by erupting for six runs in the second inning on a two-run double by winning pitcher Zach Fike, two wild pitches, an error and a fielders choice play. A walk, a hit batter and a single by Brian Fry loaded the bases to set up the threat.
Fike, who also drove in Medina’s first run with a single in the opening frame, allowed only 3 hits and stuck out 10 in six innings of work on the mound.
Xander Payne, who came on to retire the side in order in the seventh registering one strikeout, also banged out two hits at the plate as did Alex Doval.
The Mustangs capped off the win by scoring three times in both the sixth and seventh innings. Doval had a double and AJ Seefeldt an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth while hits by Jacob Velesko and Hayden Woodroe set up the seventh inning uprising.
Trevor Hescke had 2 hits for Newfane which slips to 3-4.
Akron 10, Baker 0
Akron blanked Barker 10-0 to improve to 4-2 as Jack Klodzinski and Drew Bower combined to hurl a 3 hit shutout.
At the pate, Klodzinski, Mitchell Holtz and Jake Mazza each had 3 hits for the Tigers.
