Big 2nd quarter sparks G-R girls past N-O

Building up a commanding 20 point half-time advantage the Genesee Region League went on to down the Niagara-Orleans League 65-42 in the 22nd Exceptional Seniors girls basketball game this evening at Medina.

Leading by only five, 16-11, at the end of the opening period, the G-R outscored the N-O 24-9 in the decisive second quarter to open up a 40-20 half-time advantage. Lorelei Dillenbeck (Lyndonville) scored 6, Isabel Breeden (Pembroke) 5 and Haley Shaffer (Lyndonville) and Amelia McCulley (Notre Dame) 4 each to lead that surge.

The G-R maintained a 20 point, 52-32, lead at the three-quarter mark.

Breeden finished with 10 and McCulley and Dillenbeck 9 each to lead a parade of 12 G-R scorers. Dayi Cabballero (Byron-Bergen) added 8, Melanie Pohl (Alexander) 6, Karli Houseknecht (Pembroke), Shaffer and Avelin Tomidy (Notre Dame) 4, Ava Wagoner (Byron-Bergen), Kendall Phillips (Byron-Bergen) and Maggie Monachino (Notre Dame) 3 and Lauren Nelson (Wheatland-Chili) 2.

Medina’s Rylee VanNostrand scored a game high 16 to lead the N-O squad as S’koi Sanders (Albion) added 6, Melanie Holtz (Akron) 5, Stella Poler (Medina) and Juliana Buscarino (Roy-Hart) 4, Makenna Elsenheimer (Roy-Hart) 3 and Alexis Cacciatore (Roy-Hart) and Lilah Frerichs (Wilson) 2 each.
