A walk filled first inning proved costly as Medina dropped a 10-2 decision to Batavia this afternoon in the non league season opening baseball game at Vets Park.

Capitalizing on six walks, an error and one hit, Batavia scored seven quick runs in the first inning, a lead the Blue Devils never relinquished.

Sam Crowley got Medina’s first hit and first run of the season when he doubled in the third inning and came home on a fielders choice play.

The Mustangs only other run came in the fifth on a walk and a fielders choice play.

Shane Freeman and Jason Hellwig also had hits for Medina in the sixth inning but both were left stranded.

Five players saw action on the mound for the Mustangs including Adam Hoot, Josh Scroger, Matt Riemer, Brennan Znkievich and Hellwig.

Medina next hosts Willamsville South in a non league game at 4:30 p.m.Thursday as Wednesday’s scheduled Niagara-Orleans League opener at CSAT has been postponed.
