Barker to face familiar foe in field hockey regional

Two long time postseason field hockey rivals will clash Saturday as Barker and East Rochester meet at 1 p.m. at Medina’s Vets Park in the Class C Far West Regional.

Medina, in fact, is hosting a Far West Regional field hockey triple header as Amherst (Section VI) will face Brighton (Section V) at 11 a.m. in Class B and Clarence (Section VI) will take on Fairport (Section V) at 3 p.m. in Class A.

It marks the sixth straight year that Barker and East Rochester have met for the Class C Far West Region title.

Barker blanked East Rochester 2-0 last year to advance to the state semis where the Lady Raiders dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Southampton. The Lady Raiders also downed East Rochester in the 2010 regionals but then lost to Pierson/Bridgehampton iin the state semis.

East Rochester bested Barker in the regional in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Barker gained a spot in the regional by defeating Eden 3-1 in the Section VI Class C title contest Wedesday at Amherst.

Soccer

Akron’s boys and girls soccer teams will both be competing in the Class B Far West Regionals this weekend. The girls team will face Hornell at 7:30 this evening at Amherst. The boys squad will take on Livonia at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Eastridge. The Tigers boys squad downed Medina 2-0 in the Section VI Class B state qualifier to advance to the regional.

Cross-Country

The Barker boys cross-county team will be competing in the state Class D championship race and the Akron girls in the Class C race on Saturday at Queensbury High near Glens Falls. The Barker boys finished second at the state meet last year.

Youth Football

The Niagara Orleans Football Association will host its three division championship games on Saturday at Roy-Hart.

In the Mini Division, the No. 1 seed Medina Colts will face No. 2 Akron at 10 a.m.. The Colts nipped Elba-Oakfield 6-0 in the semifinals last weekend.

In the JV Division, No. 2 seed Albion will take on No. 1 Newfane at noon. The Albion JV squad defeated Batavia 20-6 last weekend in the semifinals.

In the Varsity Division, No. 2 Pembroke will take on No. 1 Akron at 2 p.m.
