Making it 12 wins in a row after a slow 4-4-1 start to the season, Avon edged past Kendall 2-1 at Hilton this evening to earn the Section V Class C berth to the state girls soccer playoffs.

Avon grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half on a tally by Mackenzie Culhane.

Kendall though battled back to knot the contest when Maya Rutland netted her team leading 29th goal of the season with 14 minutes to go in the second half off an assist from Kristen Jacob.

However, Avon answered back with what proved to be the game winning goal by Abigail Keenan, her 20th of the season, with just seven minutes remaining.

“It was definitely a physical game and they controlled the middle of the field. Avon played a hard, hard game,” said Kendall Coach Pam Beres. “We had a great season though and I’m very proud of what the girls accomplished.”

Kendall, which captured both the Genesee Region League Division 1 and Section V Class CCC titles, finishes the season at 17-2-1.

Class CCC champion Avon advanced to the contest by nipping Class C champ York 3-2 on Monday in the first game of the qualifier series.
