January 1st marks the start of a new year but in 2017 it brings to end and organization that has provided more than 50 years of dedicated “volunteer” services to non-profit organizations and police departments in and around Orleans County.

The County Legislature has made the decision to disband the Orleans County Auxiliary Police, siting a potential for liability and a lack of training, even though there has never been an incident involving the organization and they long in over 1,000 hours of service a year.

Unfortunately, we are in an era that any kind of police work is becoming more dangerous and liability is on the increase. Rather than assisting the Auxiliary Police to help reduce the potential for liability, they elected to disband this all-volunteer organization that assisted with public functions such as the Strawberry Festival, the 4-H Fair, the Parade of Lights, the Fourth of July and the Squirrel Hunt, just to name a few.
