Area wrestlers set for sectionals

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Lyndonville’s Jeff Gress Jr., who won a Section V Class B title last weekend, will be one of nearly three dozen area wrestlers who will be competing  in the sectional championships this weekend.

A berth in the state championships will be the goal of nearly three dozen area wrestlers will be competing in the sectional championships this weekend.

Lyndonville, Holley and Kendall wrestlers will be competing in the Section V Division 2 (small schools) championships at SUNY Brockport while Albion, Medina and Barker/Roy-Hart grapplers will be taking part in the Section VI Division 2 championships at Jamestown Community College.

Holley has the largest local contingent having advanced a total of 10 wrestlers from last weekend’s Section V Class BB Tournament led by Nick Shenck who captured the 132 lb. title.

The Hawks delegation, and their finishing positions at the Class BB Tournament, also includes Austen Vroman (2nd at 285), Zach Day (3rd at 170), Erik Balys (4th at 145), Patrick Purtell (4th at 152), Chris Yockel (4th at 138), Cameron Thorn (5th at 220), Dalton Moyer (6th at 152), Nate Schoonmaker (6th at 99) and Ross Pinson (6th at 195).

Lyndonville has advanced seven matmen from the Class B Tournament led by Jeff Gress Jr. who won the 120 lb. weight class. The Tigers contingent also includes Dustin Joy (2nd a 138), Tom Follman (2nd at 152), Dustin Hinkley (2nd at 160), Garren Bayne (4th at 126), Reese Ledford (5th at 106) and Chase Stinson (5th at 113).

Kendall has advanced three from the Class B Tournament including Tristyn Mayer (3rd at 99), Paul Urquhart (4th at 113) and Jeremy Browe (6th at 152).

Barker/Roy-Hart has advanced five wrestlers from last weekend’s Section VI Class C Tournament led by individual weight class champions Cameron Swick (160) and Kirk Fay (285). Also advancing are Brent Bachman (2nd at 132), Ryan Ulrich (4th at 145) and Matt Steves (4th at 285).

Medina advanced a quartet of wrestlers from the Class C Tournament led by Joe Velez who won the 126 lb. weight class and earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.

The Mustangs also had Colby Petrie (106) and Elijah Sones (170) both place fourth and Charles Beach earn a medical wildcard entry to the state qualifier.

Albion likewise has advanced four wrestlers from the Class B Tournament including Tim Drake (195), Blake Aina (145) and Preston Flugel (125) who all placed third and Cade Aina (120) who took fourth.

The Section V State qualifier will get underway at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The semifinals are scheduled for noon on Saturday with the finals at 5 p.m.

The Section VI state qualifier will be held on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the finals slated for 6:30 p.m.
