Area grapplers set to compete in sectional class tournaments

Area high school wrestlers will take the first step in the postseason road toward the state championships by competing in sectional class tournaments this weekend.
In Section VI, Niagara-Orleans League champion Newfane, Medina, Barker/Roy-Hart, Akron and Wilson will be competing in the Class C Tournament at Eden while Albion will be taking part in the Class B tourney at Cheektowaga. Both tournaments begin at 9 a.m. Saturday with the finals slated for 5:30 p.m.
The top four place finishers in each weight class will advance to the Section VI state qualifier to be held February 15 at Niagara County Community College.
Medina is led by Brennen Callara (106), who captured an N-O title last weekend, Joe Velez (113) and Ben Howell (145) who both placed second and Charles Beach (182) and Kalvin Packer (220) who both finished third.

Albion is paced by Kollin Reynolds (195), who claimed an N-O title, Aaron Burnside (138), Ed Wolfe (170), Aaron Mulroy (182) and Dylan Burkhardt (220) who finished second and Blake Aina (132) and Justyn Hanes (160) who both took third.
N-O champions Brent Bachman (113) and Cameron Swick (120) head Barker/Roy-Hart’s contingent which also has James Brady (285) who placed second and Tyler Choate (106), Hayden Hathaway (113), Ryan Ulrich (138), DJ Gardner (152) and Jeremy Allen (170) who each finished third.
Genesee Region League champion Holley will be competing in the Section V Class BB Tournament at Letchworth on Friday and Saturday. The finals are slated for 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Lyndonville and Kendall will be taking part in the Section V Class B tournament at Arkport. Lyndonville’s Tony Recco is a two-time defending Class B champion.
In Section V the top six wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state qualifier tournament.
