Albion to host sectional opening twin bill

Photos by Cheryl Wertman – Albion’s Emily Blanchard and Brad Sanford and their Purple Eagles teammates will open Section VI Class B1 playoff competition at home in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Postseason playoff action will tipoff Tuesday as Albion hosts a Section VI Class B1 girl-boy doubleheader.

The No. 8 seed Albion girls team (11-8) will host No. 9 Springville (7-12) at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to a quarterfinal contest at top seeded Depew (15-5) on Thursday.

The Purple Eagles have been sparked offensively this season by Chanyce Powell, who is averaging 15.8 points per game, Emily Blanchard 9.5 and Caitlynn Snook, 6.5.

The No. 12 Albion boys squad (6-14) will host No. 13 City Honors (6-14) at 7 p.m. with the victor advancing to a second round contest at No. 5 Dunkirk (11-9) on Wednesday.

The Purple Eagles, who were given a big lift recently with the return of senior guard Tommy Mattison who missed most of the season due to an injury, have been led offensively by Kory Reynolds who is averaging 12.3 pmts per outing, Lamar Chambers 10.3, Mattison 8.5 and Chase Hall 8.0. Reynolda has also grabbed off 225 rebounds and Hall 118.

Tuesday will also feature a trio of Section V boys contests as No. 9 Lyndonville (9-11) visits No. 8 Honeoye (10-10) and No. 12 Kendall (5-15) travels to No. 5 Lima Christian (12-8) in Cass D1 and No. 13 Holley (0-20) visits No. 4 LeRoy (12-8) in Class C2, all at 7 p.m.

In Section VI Class B2 boys games on Tuesday, No. 10 Roy-Hart (6-14) hosts No. 15 Eden (3-17) at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to a Wednesday meeting with No. 7 Lafayette. No. 14 Akron (3-17) will also host No. 11 Oracle (5-14) at 7 p.m. with the victor advancing to a Wednesday contest at No. 6 Wilson (11-9).

In other Section VI girls contests on Tuesday, No. 7 Newfane (13-7) will host No. 10 Emerson (8-11) in Class B1 at 7 p.m. while in Class B2, No. 8 Akron (8-12) will host No. 9 JFK (5-15) and No. 11 Roy-Hart (5-15) visits No. 6 Southwestern (13-7), both at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, the No. 8 Kendall girls (9-11) will host No. 9 Naples (8-12) in a Class D1 game at 7 p.m..

The Lady Eagles have been led offensively this season by Taylor ReQua, who is averaging 8.1 points and has grabbed off 155 rebounds and Lizzie Rath who is averaging 7.5 points and has 133 rebounds.

In another D1 contests, the No. 14 Lyndonville girls (3-17) will visit Genesee Region League foe Notre Dame (14-6) while in Class C1, No. 13 Holley (0-19) visits No. 2 Gananda (17-3), both at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, the No. 5 seed Medina girls (15-5) will face No. 4 MST Prep (8-3) at City Honors at 5 p.m.

Offensively, the Mustangs have been sparked by Je’ne Brown who is averaging 20 points per outing and Maddie Williams who is averaging 12.6. Brown has also grabbed off 224 rebounds, Molley Gross 129, Maddie Winters 129 and Williams 109.

On Friday, top seeded undefeated (12-0) Niagara-Orleans League champion Medina will host a Class B2 quarterfinal round game at 7 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between No. 8 Gowanda (12-7) and No. 9 JFK (7-13).

The Mustangs, who are 16-4 overall, have been led offensively by Jalin Copper, who is averaging 21.4 points per game, Johnny Salone 12.7 and Izaiah Rhim 9.1 Cooper has also grabbed off 185 rebounds, Salone 155 and Rhim 146.
