Albion spikers win Starpoint Tourney

PENDLETON – Going 9-2 on the busy day, Albion captured top honors today at the Starpoint Volleyball Tournament.

Albion outlasted Mount St. Mary’s 25-15, 15-25, 15-13 in the championship match.

Trailing 13-11, Albion won the decisive third set as Kelsee Soule served up the final four points in a row. Chanyce Powell made a big block to win the 14th point.

“It’s Awesome,” Albion coach Ann Capacci said of the Purple Eagles tourney victory. “The kids really did play well.”

Albion bested Immaculata in the semifinals 25-19, 25-23. Powell served up points 3-6, Soule 13-18 and Sara Millspaugh 22-24 in the deciding second set.

Albion opened the tourney with pool play victories over Niagara Catholic 25-7, 25-8 and Amherst 25-10, 25-9 before splitting with Lockport 18-25, 25-16.

Soule and Powell were both named to the All-Tournament team.

On the day, Soule had 21 kills, 33 digs, 15 aces and 2 blocks; Powell 9 kills, 3 digs, 4 aces and 1 block; Millspaugh 16 kills, 16 digs and 11 aces and Meghan Hurley 12 kills, 18 digs, 17 assists and 4 aces.
