Albion spikers to face familiar foe

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Albion’s Sierra Newton and her Purple Eagle teammates will host Iroquois Monday in the quarterfinals of the Section VI Class B volleyball playoffs.

In a rematch of a late regular season non league contest, No. 2 seed Albion will host No. 10 Iroquois at 6 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals of the Section VI volleyball playoffs.

The undefeated (18-0) Purple Eagles scored a narrow four set 26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19 win at Iroquois in that non league encounter.

Albion advanced to the quarterfinals by downing No. 15 Amherst 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 while Iroquois bested No. 7 Kenmore East 25-22, 25-19, 25-17.

The victor will face the winner of the No. 14 Olean vs. No. 6 Starpoint match in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Olean came from behind to upset No. 3 Pioneer 15-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-15 in the opening round while Starpoint ousted No. 11 Dunkirk 25-10, 25-13, 25-11.

In Class C1 quarterfinal round matches Monday, No. 6 Medina visits No. 3 Akron and No. 8 Newfane travels to top seeded Eden.

Akron downed Medina twice during the Niagara-Orleans League season in straight sets.

Medina defeated Lackawanna 25-15, 25-13, 25-7 and Newfane downed Tonawanda 25-12, 25-18, 25-12 in the opening round.
