Albion runner places third at sectionals

Newfane boys and girls win Sectional titles, and have first place finishers in Class C

Photos by Tom Rivers: Alanna Holman competes in Sectionals today at Bemus Point. She finished third overall in Class C and qualified for the state meet on Nov. 10 at Sunken Meadow State Park at Long Island. She also qualified last year as a freshman.

Albion sophomore Alanna Holman placed third in the Class C race at the Section VI cross-country champions held today at Bemis Point to earn a berth in the up coming state championships. Her teammate Emma Mathes placed 24th.

The Niagara-Orleans League champion Newfane boys and girls teams both captured Class C team titles.  The boys garnered 66 points to best runner-up Alden which had 89. Wilson placed fifth with 172 points.

The Panthers were led by individual race winner Austin Burkard (17:09.6). Nick Baes also placed 12th, Alan Lingle 19th and Nathan Moran 20th for the Panthers.

The Newfane girls squad took top honors with 71 points as Silver Creek was second with 103. Akron placed fourth and Albion fifth.

Individual race winner Kim Goerss (19:56.04) led the way for the Lady Panthers as Vanessa Burkard was 13th, Lydia Chunco 19th and Leah Sigemann 20th.

Also in the Class C boys race Wilson’s William Schwarzmueller was 6th, Roy-Hart’s Ozzy Moore 13th and Akron’s Casey Zuba 14th.

In the Class C girls race Roy-Hart’s Anna Rickard was 7th, Akron’s Lauren Wagner 10th and Akron’s Kaila Szczygielski 15th.

In the boys Class D race, Barker finished second to Maple Grove. Peter DiLorenzo finished 6th, Dominic Clementi 13th, Steven Class 17th and Zach Richbart 20th for the Raiders.

In the girls Class D race, Lucinda Ingro placed 12th and Haleigh Mason 18th for Barker which finished third in the team standings.

Austin Burkard, who is only a freshman, won the Class C Sectional title, in 17:09.6. Kyle Urban, an eighth-grader from Alden, was a second behind Burkard.

Kim Goerss, a Newfane senior, won the girls Class C race in 19:56.04.

William Schwarzmueller, a senior at Wilson, also qualified for states by coming in sixth place with a time 17:23.08. He edged out Brett Russell of the Springville-Griffith Institute for the final spot to go to the state championship.
