Albion locked up outright possession of its first Niagara-Orleans League tennis championship since 2004 this afternoon without having to take the court as Akron defeated runner-up Medina 3-2 1/2.

The Purple Eagles had clinched at least a tie for the title by downing defending champion Medina 3-2 1/2 last week.

Albion, which ironically hosts Akron Tuesday to close out the N-O season, is now 9-2 while Medina finishes the league campaign at 8-4.

Wins at second singles by Ryan Meek, 6-4, 6-0 over Tristan Sanders, and at third singles by Nathan Chubb, 6-4, 6-3 over Michael Cardone, sparked Akron to the win.

Improving to 6-4, the Tigers also took the second doubles match as Cierra Janis and Jacob Meyer downed Carson Zgoda and Xion Baes 6-4, 6-2.

Medina’s Kristian Snyder won the first singles match 6-4, 6-0 over Tyler Kelly.

The Mustangs also took the first doubles as Nick Dieter and Brian Bogan downed Brandon Meek and Dustin Earl 6-3, 6-0 and the third doubles as Tom Horgan and Austin Owens bested Skyler Earl and Sarah Hoefler 6-0, 6-0.

In the othe N-O matches, Wilson (6-4) blanked Roy-Hart (1-10) 5 1/2-0 and Barker (7-4) downed Newfane (1-10) 4-1 1/2.

Victories in the three singles matches by Dominic Curicone, Gabriel Curicone and Alex Keil sparked Wilson to the victory.
