Albion, Medina and Roy-Hart/Barker all advance wrestlers to the state championships

Albion, Medina and Roy-Hart/Barker have all advanced wrestlers to the upcoming state Division 2 championships by posting top two finishes at the Section VI state qualifier which concluded this evening at SUNY Fredonia.

Albion eight grader Stryker Sanders (108) rebounded from a quarterfinal round loss to win five straight matches earning second place honors and a trip to the states.

Sanders captured his decisive final two matches in exciting fashion first with a 6-3 sudden victory win in the consolation final and then with a narrow 4-3 decision victory in the True Second bout for second place honors.

Medina seniors Reece Senske (131) and Brody Fry (190) also both earned second place finishes to advance to the states.

Roy-Hart/Barker senior Ronan Klug captured the 170 lb. title to gain a spot at the state championships.

Senske opened with three straight victories by pin in times of :43, 3:31 and 1:24 in the semifinals before dropping a technical fall decision in the finals. Advancing to the finals though was enough to gain him a second straight trip to the states where he placed 8th a year ago.

Fry likewise opened the competition with three straight pins in times of 1:03, :46 and 2:24 in the semifinals. However he also dropped a technical fall decision in the finals. Rebounding he posted a 10-8 decision win in the True Second bout to earn second place honors and advance to the states.

Klug opened with technical fall win and then scored pins of 2:38 in the quarterfinals and 3:06 in the semifinals. Keeping the momentum, he scored a 10-2 major decision win over Jake Zeigler (Portville) in the title bout to punch his ticket to the state championships.

Niagara-Orleans League champion Newfane advanced a trio of wrestlers to the states as Ayden Buttery and Aidan Gillings finished 1-2 at 145 and Jake Morello took second at 160.

Wilson’s Jacob Stephenson won at 160 to advance to the states as did his Lakemen teammate Hamza Merrick with a second place finish at 285.

Medina also had Luke Duffina place 5th at 131.

Albion had Justin Mengs (101) and Jaxon Lynch (145) both place sixth.

Roy-Hart/Barker had Luke Fay place fourth at 138.

The state championships will be held at Albany February 28-March 1.
