Albion honors Purple Eagles ’81 title team

Photo by Cheryl Wertman – Over a dozen players and three coaches from Albion’s 1981 Division VII and Section VI championship football team were on hand at Homecoming this evening which celebrated that Purple Eagles title team. The players on hand included Allan Ellis, Dan Bartlett, Eric Knaak, Jim Soule, John Fitzak, Ken Burke, Kyle Smith, Mathia Ellis, Randy Knaak, Roger Misso, Scott Neri, Steven Brownell and Jim Owens. Also on hand were head Coach Dick Diminuco and assistant Coaches Keith Piccirilli and Jim Simboli along with several cheerleaders.

Contributed Photo – Albion’s 1981 championship tram went 7-0 to claim the Division VII crown and then defeated Frewsburg 49-14 in the sectional title contest at Rich (now Highmark) Stadium. Quarterback Ken Burke threw 4 touchdown passes in the title contest 3 to David Austin and 1 to Ken McNeil. McNeil also ran for 2 scores and Austin 1. Jim Owens tacked on 5 extra point kicks. The Purple Eagles used key wins over Newfane (34-22) and Medina (14-0) to claim the Division VII title.
