Albion grapplers pin rival Medina

Six pins sparked Albion to a 51-36 victory over visiting rival Medina this evening in the Niagara-Orleans League season opener.

Back-to-back pins by Preston Flugel (120), in 3:11, and by Jordan Wolcott (126), in 4:38, ignited Albion out to a 12-0 lead.

Medina’s Joe Velez (132) answered with a pin in 1:46 to cut the deficit to 12-6 but the Mustangs would get no closer.

Albion got those points right back on a pin by Hunter Albright (138) in 2:15.

The Purple Eagles then put a lock on the victory on a decision win by Tim Wells (152) followed by three consecutive pins by Israel Florentino (160) in 2:28, by Sam Slick (170) in 3:27 and by Tony Rotoli (182) in 3:16 for an unbeatable 45-6 lead.

Albion’s Sam Slick battled to score a win over Medina’s Elijah Sones.

Medina also got a pin by Javier Gomez (285) in 1:56.

The Mustangs next host St. Mary’s of Lancaster at 6 p.m. Thursday while the Purple Eagles host Kendall at 6 p.m. Friday.

The other two N-O openers will be Thursday evening with defending champion Newfane at Wilson and Akron at Barker/Roy-Hart.

Byron-Bergen 59, Lyndonville 27

Seven forfeit wins keyed Byron-Bergen to a 59-27 victory over visiting Lyndonville in a Genesee Region League match.

Dustin Joy had a pin, Jeff Gress Jr. a technical fall win and Garren Bayne a major decision victory for Lyndonville.
