Albion girls upend top seed in B-1 sectionals

Rebounding from an early deficit, No. 8 seed Albion rallied to upend host No. 1 City Honors 3-1 this evening in the quarterfinal round of the Section VI Class B-1 girls soccer playoffs.

City Honors grabbed a quick 1-0 lead just 10 minutes in but Albion answered right back with two quick goals just three minutes apart midway through the half to take the lead for good.

The Purple Eagles pulled even on a goal by Mariah Plain at the 20 minute mark and then took the lead on a tally by Brylie Hapeman at the 23 minute mark.

Albion added an insurance goal in the second half by Claire Squicciarini.

Elisabeth Baker earned the assist on Albion’s fnal two goals.

Sydney Mulka made 8 saves in goal to anchor the Purple Eagles defense.

Improving to 10-6-2, Albion will next face No. 5 Alden in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Williamsville North. Alden ousted No. 4 I Prep 6-0.

Niagara-Orleans League champion No. 2 seed Newfane also advanced to the B-1 semis with a 3-2 win over Springville on goals by Kayleigh Daniels, Emily Foltz and Erica Flagler.

In Class B-2 quarterfinal action, No. 2 Akron defeated No. 7 JFK 8-0 as Kara Sequin had 5 goals, No. 3 Southwestern downed No. 6 Roy-Hart 5-1 and No. 4 Wilson blanked No. 5 Eden 4-0.
