Albion girls top Arts for first victory

Combining a fast start with as strong finish, Albion downed visiting Buffalo Arts 36-31 this evening to snap a season opening two game losing streak.

Albion jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the outset on a rebound bucket and a jumper by Caitlynn Snook, a three by Janae Doty and a jumper by Natalie DiCureia.

However, Arts closed the period with an 8-1 run to slice the deficit to 10-9.

Keeping the momentum, Arts then took an 18-17 lead at the end of a sea-saw (2 ties, 3 lead changes) second quarter on a late three by Destiny Barber.

Back-and forth action continued throughout the third period with 3 more ties and 6 lead changes as Arts emerged with a slender 29-28 lead at the three-quarter mark.

Snook, who scored 5 points in each of the first two periods, added 6 more in the third to keep Albion close.

Regaining the momentum they enjoyed in the opening period, the Purple Eagles then reclaimed the lead for good by putting together a key 6-0 run in the first minute and a half of the final stanza.

That clutch stretch included a layup by Snook, a layup off a steal by Brylie Hapeman and a jumper by Sarah Gregori for a 34-29 lead.

Snook finished with a game high 18 points as Gregori added 5, Elisabeth Baker and Hapeman 4, Doty 3 and DiCureia 2.

Taliah Bush led Arts with 13.

Albion next hosts Medina in the Niagara-Orleans League opener at 7 p.m. Friday.

Kendall 37, Barker 32
Building up a 23-8 half-time advantage, Kendall went on to defeat visiting Barker 37-32 in a non league contest.

Jenna Regan scored 9, Lizzie Sutphen 8, Lyndsay Wright 7, Taylor ReQua and Brittney Marks 5, Katherine Pearson 2 and Brooke Lawson 1 for Kendall which improves to 3-0.

Hailey Brown led Barker with a game high 14 as Sydnie Luckman added 7, Kylie Annable, Serena Harris and Gabby Baker 3 and Kylie Miller 2.

Notre Dame 65, Lyndonville 41
Breaking away from a 10-10 first quarter deadlock, Notre Dame went to to build up leads of 22-13 at the half and 44-29 at the three-quarter mark in route to posting a 65-41 Genesee Region League win over host Lyndonville.

Callie McCulley led Notre Dame with a game high 21.

Ella Lewis scored 17, Savannah Poler 9 and Anna Lewis 7 for Lyndonville.

Boys Basketball
Newfane 66, Roy-Hart 37
Newfane bested visiting Roy-Hart 66-37 in the N-O League boys opener as Kyle DeVoogel scored a game high 28, Max Weber 15 and Brandon Gross 10.

Weber scored 10 in the second period to key a 19-12 run which vaulted Newfane out to a 32-22 half-time advantage.  DeVoogel then netted 12 in the third period sparking a 17-8 surge which upped the Panthers advantage to 49-30 at the three-quarter mark.

Jake Bruning scored 11 and Charlie Brigham 8 for Roy-Hart.
