Albion girls romp in B1 sectional opener; Medina tops Depew in non league contest
Back-to-back marathon scoring innings keyed No. 7 seed Albion to a 29-8 victory over visiting No. 10 CSAT this afternoon in the opening round of the Section VI Class B1 softball playoffs.
Leading 3-0, Albion broke the contest wide open by erupting for 9 runs in the third inning and 12 more in the fourth to roar away to a commanding 24-1 advantage.
Brylie Hapeman, Natalie DiCureia and Sierra Newton all had run producing hits in the third inning which also featured half a dozen walks.
Hapeman then had a three-run double and an RBI single in the fourth as DiCureia and Emani Poole also both singled in runs.
Erin Doty picked up the win in the circle for the Purple Eagles.
Albion next visits No. 2 Fredonia in the B1 quarterfinals on Thursday.
Medina 8, Depew 6
A five run first inning sparked Medina to an 8-6 win over Depew at Vets Park in a non league game.
Ryenn Oliver drove in 3 runs and Camri King plated 2 in the decisive opening frame for the Mustangs. King had a pair of doubles on the day.
The contest was a rematch of last year’s Section VI Class B state qualifier game which saw Depew down Medina 5-2.
Seeded no. 4, Medina next hosts No. 5 Olmsted in the quarterfinals of the Section VI Class B2 playoffs on Thursday.
Byron-Bergen 4, Holley 1
Undefeated Byron-Bergen (6-0) downed Holley (6-2) 4-1 in a Genesee Region League tennis match.
Dalton Thurley and Steven Morgan earned Holley’s lone point at first doubles.
Weather causes postponements
The rainy weather earlier in the day washed out the Northstar vs. Lyndonville, Holley vs. Byron-Bergen and Wilson vs. Newfane baseball games; the Kendall vs. Notre Dame, Roy-Hart vs. Oakfield-Alabama and Holley vs. Pembroke softball contests and the Medina vs. Akron tennis match.
