Akron trims Barker in field hockey shootout

Taking over sole possession of first place, Akron downed host Barker 1-0 in a shootout (3-1) this afternoon in a rain soaked key early season Niagara-Orleans League field hockey game.

Akron goalie Ashley Reiner came up huge for the Lady Tigers in the shootout making clutch saves on three of Barker’s four shooters.

Akron jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the shootout on goals by Lacey Berghorn and Madison Brege.

Barker did cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Natalie Bruning but Reiner came up with big saves to stop the Lady Raiders final two shooters.

Akron put a lock on the victory as Olivia McClaine scored to give the Lady Tigers a 3-1 and Reiner followed up with her final save on Barker’s fourth shooter.

Neither team could score in 60 minutes of regulation time or in the 10 minute 7 on 7 overtime period.

Akron had an 8-4 edge in corner opportunities during regulation time.

The Lady Tigers stay undefeated at 4-0 while defending champion Barker is now 3-1.

Newfane 3, Medina 2

Trailing 2-1, Newfane rallied for two unanswered second half goals to nip host Medina 3-2 this evening at Vets Park.

Alex Strong scored both of Medina’s first half goals.

Newfane is now 1-2 and Medina 0-3-1.

Wilson 4, Kenmore 2

Snapping a season opening three game losing streak, Wilson downed visiting Kenmore (1-1-1) 4-2 this evening.
